Pope Benedict the XVI (Joseph Ratzinger) was required to join the Nazi youth as all German males were. It was join or jail. Exacly like the selective service requirements in the United States. On a mans 18th birthday in the United States they must sign up for the selective service or face up to 3 years in jail.
